The inns, where the port and trade intersect and come to life, have a very important place in İzmir's history. Since the mid-17th century, the most important reflection of the increasing trade volume in the city has been the construction of new inns. Kemeraltı, which emerged in the area created by the filling of the inner harbor and hosts many large and small inns, can be called a bazaar of inns.
The last stop for goods coming from the East with camel caravans and the first stop for goods coming from the West with ships, Izmir's inns are not only places where trade takes place, but also places of memory where different cultures come together and communicate. While most of the inns, which are the carriers of the city's memory, have succumbed to time and have not survived to the present day, a small number of them have managed to survive and continue to serve with different functions today.
To date, many studies have been conducted on Izmir Inns and these studies have included important information about the inns. As Hafıza Izmir team, we analyzed all the studies and thought that creating an inventory of Izmir's inns would be useful for both the memory of the city and researchers. The “Inventory of Izmir Inns” was realized by Emek Su Yaray, a member of our team. from the link you can access. Covering 242 inns built between the 17th and 19th centuries, this inventory offers the opportunity to examine the inns according to their region, type and current condition.
