Symposium on Izmir Research in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period Held

“Izmir is a vast repository of memory that cannot be contained within a single coastline; it is a region shaped by centuries of trade, production, and cultural exchange. Integrated with the Mediterranean world, nourished by its hinterland, and possessing the character of a ‘gateway city’ rather than just a ‘port city,’ this geography should be understood as a multi-layered economic and cultural hub.”

As part of our agency's Memory Izmir studies, we continued our academic-based memory journey, which we began last year with the “Izmir Studies in Antiquity – Production and Trade in Izmir” topic in our Izmir Research Symposium series, with this year's “Izmir Studies in the Middle and Early Modern Ages Symposium.”.

Held at the İZQ Innovation Center with the participation of expert researchers and academics in their fields, our symposium formed the second part of a series aiming to offer an uninterrupted perspective on İzmir's historical depth.

The papers presented over two days shed light on Izmir's hidden memory. Our symposium revealed new areas of inquiry and strong research trajectories concerning the city's microhistory.

We are pleased to hold the second İzmir Studies Symposium and thank our esteemed academics who contributed to our event and all İzmir lovers who followed our symposium with great interest.
